It is often seen that we handle our problems on our own. An out of court settlement when it is a case, but even an out of Police Station settlement is not a bad idea when we think of it.
Lost you mobile? Never going to find it. No point in filing a case.
Lost you wallet? Who do you think has time to look for a wallet? Forget it
Lost clothes from you hostel room? Was it UCB or Reebok? None? Then let it be... get a new one.
An unknown person got into your house today? Oh! The door was open? Is anything missing? Thank God!
These little ignorance teach us how not to approach Police and we as Indians are very good at learning and applying when it comes to such things and we apply it here..
Someone was following you back home today? Oh, be careful.
Those guys were eve-teasing you? I think you should change you route?
They have now reached our gates. Let it be. Don't go to the Police. Police is not going to be of any help. On the contrary, they will add to the trouble and these guys will trouble us even more.
Alas!
They raped her? Don't tell anybody. Not even the Police. They'll not let her live.
Are we ashamed when we are a victim to an earthquake? Are we ashamed when we are a victim to a tsunami? Are we shamed when we are a victim to a flood? Are we ashamed when we are a victim of a robbery? Is anyone ashamed if a member of their family is murdered? Then why are people ashamed if someone is raped? One is still a victim. A criminal needs to be ashamed of being unethical and performing an illegal act.
We don't approach the Police for anything and this way we only encourage the wrong doers.
Now the point would be, Police doesn't do anything. So, my question is, have we tried? Even if we have and have been disappointed in past, it must have been a case or two. In that case do we try to approach another Policeman or another station? They are here to help us, but if we don't help ourselves, why would anybody else?
As they say, "help us, to help you". We need to get some notions out of our minds. A person or two might begin but any revolution requires a mass. When we go for interviews, we always chose to say we are leaders and possess great leadership qualities. But are we really leaders? If yes, please take a step. Be a leader because a leader doesn't need other to begin.
A whole generation has to go in if there has to be a radical change. If policemen are not helping you, make them help you. Watching it in movies feels good when a hero or heroine triggers that sense of duty in a policeman and he is bound to do his duties. Why don't we then try to bring that change?
